Brenneman came to Alaska in 1900 and staked a claim on Kodiak Island. Eventually, he went to Katalla where he invested in the first oil well. He met Anna Helen Petersen in Katalla and married her a short time later and they had four children. In 1907, he became a U.S. Marshall at Katalla and later was head marshal for the Third Judicial District in Valdez, a position he held until 1922. He died in 1940 in Long Beach, California. Thomas Riley Marshall (March 14, 1854 – June 1, 1925) was an American politician who served as the 28th vice president of the United States from 1913 to 1921 under President Woodrow Wilson. A prominent lawyer in Indiana, he became an active and well known member of the Democratic Party by stumping across the state for other candidates and organizing party rallies that later helped him win election as the 27th governor of Indiana.
